A match is the heart of grassroots sport in Britain — a Sunday league football fixture, a cricket game on the village green, a rugby match, a netball or hockey fixture. Whether you are the captain rallying a team or a club secretary letting supporters know, getting people to the right ground at the right time, with a full side and a few on the touchline, is the weekly puzzle. The format depends on the sport and the level. For players: what to bring, the kit or strip, and arrangements for travel to an away ground. For supporters: parking, access and refreshments. The digital format is made for a weekly fixture. The link goes out on the team WhatsApp group, the RSVP shows the captain exactly who is available and who is not, and you can call up a substitute in a tap if a player drops out. A Google map drops everyone at the right ground, including the away fixtures nobody knows, and you can send a postponement in seconds if the pitch is waterlogged — which, this being Britain, it sometimes will be.
